Company profile

100% owned by Altron, what is today known as Powertech Batteries started trading as Willard Batteries – under license to ESB Incorporated, of the United States – during January 1954.

The manufacturing operation and offices are situated in Port Elizabeth. The company concentrated initially on the manufacture of automotive batteries and very soon gained an enviable reputation for the excellence of its product quality.

The first industrial batteries were produced in 1966 for the SATS Diesel Electronic Locomotives, then built by General Electric. The manufacture of motive power and stationary batteries followed in 1967.

The growth of the company continued at a fairly even pace and was financed entirely out of the company’s own profits.

Dr Bill Venter, who is the Executive Chairman of the Altron Group, approached ESB Incorporated of Philadelphia USA with a view to purchasing Willard batteries. With vision and foresight, he successfully concluded a deal and in May 1981 the entire issued share capital of Willard Batteries was purchased by Powertech Industries (Pty) Limited of the Altron Group of Companies, thus becoming a 100 percent South African owned company.

In May 1983, Willard Batteries acquired the Lucas factory in Roodepoort. During September 1984 Willard Batteries began consolidating the Roodepoort operation into the Port Elizabeth Plant. A further acquisition of a major battery brand was made in 1998 when the renowned SABAT brand joined the Powertech Battery Group. SABAT’s history dates back to 1967 when its first factory was established in Johannesburg.

The Powertech Battery Group consists essentially of two divisions, one that addresses the automotive market and the other the industrial market.

AUTOMOTIVE

The automotive market includes passenger cars as well as all types of light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles. A battery is a hard working vehicle component. It is integral to every engine and is “live” 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

The Powertech Battery Group has taken pride in manufacturing and marketing automotive batteries that have won the confidence of generations of drivers and fleet operators. In South Africa two of the leading brands are Willard Batteries and SABAT batteries. There would be very few people in the nation who would not have heard of one or both of these brands. Apart from offering the appropriate technology and premium quality for the market, these household brand names have developed very distinctive individual personalities.

GO GREEN, GO Willard Batteries

Known as the leading battery brand, Willard Batteries has earned respect across all demographic profiles as both a solid performing component and a socially responsible brand.

The Willard brand makes an ongoing contribution to the terrific NGO, Food & Trees for Africa. Through the collection and recycling of scrap batteries, Willard diverts part of the proceeds to FTFA who uses the funds to plant trees in areas of the country that need them most. This activity makes a real difference to the spirit of many communities who have benefited from tree plantings.

SOUTH AFRICA’S FASTEST MOVING BATTERY

An association with motor sport that goes back well over 30 years has gained the attention of many enthusiasts making the SABAT brand synonymous with racing.

There is goodwill for SABAT that extends into all areas of South African life as the heritage of the brand grew out of its historically massive distribution network. Modern supply logistics have restricted the everyday visibility of the brand from former days but SABAT remains one of the best known and loyally supported automotive component brands. SABAT has additionally developed a special relationship with Q.A.S.A, the Quadriplegic Association of South Africa. Members receive free batteries and have the annual opportunity of participating in an adrenalin-charged race held at Kyalami race track.
